America at 250: Still Turning the Page

Two hundred and fifty years is a remarkable milestone for any nation. It’s an opportunity to celebrate our history, our freedoms, and the countless people who helped shape the country we call home.

America has never been a perfect nation.

We’ve argued.

We’ve protested.

We’ve celebrated.

We’ve mourned.

We’ve elected leaders we loved and leaders we questioned.

Yet through it all, one thing has remained remarkably consistent:

We keep writing the next chapter.

For 250 years, Americans have debated, disagreed, dreamed, stumbled, celebrated, and kept moving forward.

At the same time, many of us recognize that we’re living through a chapter filled with uncertainty. Conversations can feel divided. Headlines can be exhausting. Friends and neighbors don’t always see the world the same way.

The past 250 years include extraordinary achievements alongside painful chapters we continue to learn from. We celebrate the ideals that inspired our nation’s founding while recognizing that living up to those ideals has been—and continues to be—a work in progress.

History reminds us that uncertainty isn’t new–and that progress is rarely a straight line. Every generation inherits both the accomplishments and the unfinished work of those who came before and is given the opportunity to write the next chapter.

This Independence Day, we’ll honor the remarkable achievement of a nation reaching its 250th birthday. We’ll also remember that the ideals of liberty, equality, and opportunity aren’t destinations—they’re aspirations that each generation continues to pursue in its own way.

As booksellers, we’re constantly reminded that some of history’s most important lessons are waiting quietly on library shelves and in new and used bookstores. If there’s one thing books have taught us, it’s that no meaningful story is without conflict. Every great story has moments of triumph, moments of heartbreak, and chapters that challenge us to become something better.

Every day we handle books written during wars, economic depressions, the civil rights movement, times of prosperity, political scandals, and moments of incredible hope. Those books remind us that every generation believed it was living through extraordinary times—and each left lessons for the next.

Biographies introduce us to remarkable people who changed the course of history. Historical fiction helps us experience the past through another person’s eyes. Memoirs teach empathy. Classic literature reminds us that the questions we’re asking today often aren’t new at all.

Books don’t always give us easy answers.

They do offer perspective. They invite us to listen before we judge, to understand before we dismiss, and to recognize the humanity in experiences different from our own. In a world that often encourages quick opinions, books remind us to slow down, think deeply, and remain curious.

As America marks its 250th birthday, we hope you’ll take a moment to enjoy the traditions that make this weekend special—family gatherings, backyard cookouts, fireworks lighting up the evening sky, and perhaps a quiet moment with a good book.

Whether you’re revisiting the history that shaped our nation, discovering voices you’ve never read before, or simply escaping into a favorite novel, every page reminds us that stories have the power to connect us.

As we mark 250 years, perhaps one of the best ways to honor our past is to keep learning from it—and to remain hopeful about the chapters still to come.

Like every well-loved book, America’s story is still being written–one chapter at a time.

All of us, in our own small ways, are helping write it.

From our family at Belle Plaine Books, we wish you a safe, joyful, and thoughtful Independence Day.

Happy 250th, America!
